QuickTime is a media player that supports most common audio and video formats. It also comes with a basic image viewer that supports most popular image formats. It offers a simple GUI with basic buttons to play, seek, and adjust volume. With the seek button you can fast-forward or rewind your video.  

Also, you can view video content as you drag the mouse pointer along the progress bar.

It is a bit slow to open, but other than that it performs well during audio and video playback. It works great with HD and Full-HD videos. It also offers integration with your browser so you can watch videos right from its window without the need to save the content to disk. Although the shareware version offers few functions other than normal playback, it is more than enough for most users. The Pro version unlocks some useful functions for recording, editing, converting, and streaming.

A disadvantage of the program is that it doesn't support some popular video formats, like WMV and DivX. So you have to install codecs manually as the application doesn't offer a way to do this automatically. Also, like most Apple software does, it installs additional tools that I consider to be bloatware. The installation package comes with an additional basic image viewer, the PictureViewer. Since Windows already has one integrated, this is just eating extra space on the disk. Software Update and Application Support are other programs in question. The update function, for instance, might as well be integrated into the main program, giving you the option to do it automatically or not, as most programs do. In short, the installation should have given users the opportunity to choose what components they wish to install.

7-Zip is a free open-source file archiver, extractor and manager which supports most popular compression formats.

The utility is remarkable for the high compression ratio of its own archive format, .7z. The 7z archives can be considerably smaller than ZIP and RAR files, despite the fact that the compression process may take longer to compress and decompress.

 The list of compression formats supported by 7-Zip that can be packed and unpacked is not so impressive and includes 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR, the number of supported extraction formats is quite extensive and includes ARJ, CAB, CHM, CPIO, DEB, DMG, HFS, ISO, LZH, LZMA, MSI, NSIS, RAR, RPM, UDF, WIM, XAR and Z.

A nice feature in 7-Zip is its file splitting option which allows you to divide one large file into a few smaller ones. It can be useful in case it is necessary to send a large file via e-mail or upload it on a website with certain file size limits.

Apart from that, 7-Zip can encrypt archive files using AES-256 algorithm which is capable of using cryptographic keys of up to 256 bits and is considered one of the top ciphers.

7-Zip doesn't eat up system resources and can be easily switched to background mode. It's interface is intuitive, however, some users believe it is quite plain and primitive.

Apparently, 7-Zip is not as popular as WinRar or WinZIP and doesn't have a whole lot of features to mark it out from file archivers of its kind. Still, it offers all the necessary options needed in an archive manager and it's performance is just great.

BitTorrent


 BitTorrent is the most famous bittorrent program available. This software is dedicated to downloading and uploading files like in a wholesale, and it has every tool needed to do it in the best and most efficient way possible.

 BitTorrent, like many other torrent managers, can handle magnet files. It has a scheduler for your downloads, so that you can determine when and how to share or download, based on time or connection availability.

                    For a very large part of people who get the Web content through torrents, μTorrent is definitely an irreplaceable tool. This tiny torrent client has grown from a pure downloader to a full-fledged torrent-associated media hub with a large community, a number of handy apps, and even social elements like uChat.

The broad variety of μTorrent features, its small size and high usability have long secured it a constant influx of users. The current latest version does not feature that many changes that would be of much relevance for the regular users and include mainly bug fixes. The killer feature remains the torrent downloader itself, equipped with six various view modes of the download progress, torrent controls and social rating scale. Magnet linking works appreciably smoother than before with mere fractions of a second between retrieving the link and the download start.

RSS feed downloading has performed a bit worse in the test. Downloading BBC podcasts on high-end test machines running under Windows 7 and Windows 8 Consumer Preview was an overall success, while at the same time it failed on an older computer under Windows XP due to lack of memory.

However, this small downside is no more than a fly in the ointment. Another score point goes to μTorrent for the apps you can find in the corresponding menu tab. Our personal favorite is uChat that allows you to chat with other seeders when downloading a torrent. It is especially helpful if you're dealing with some software download and having some questions about it. On the other hand, it would be an exaggeration to say that μTorrent is full of life: most of the time you won't find any users there.

Finally, the Windows version of μTorrent has a nice device connection option, even though it currently works only through USB connections. However, the very existence of this feature makes us hope that the future μTorrent releases will see a seamless experience of torrent sharing between devices.

The bottom line is that μTorrent is a nearly perfect torrent client with an abundance of nicely working features that is hard to outdo.

Compressed files are a handy way of sending things over the Internet, as archives are lighter than original files (so they take less time to upload or download) and can include whole folders inside them. WinRAR is created to manage and work with compressed files. Its algorithms are optimized for text, audio, and graphic files.  

It supports many various types of archive files, including ARJ, CAB, UUE, ZIP, 7-Zip, and of course RAR.

WinRAR may require some time to get used to, but if you have ever used it at least once, you won't have any difficulty getting back to it, as its interface doesn't change from one version to another. WinRAR's evolution mainly involves expansion of its capabilities. There is a total of 8 changes in this new version. They include changes in RAR and ZIP compression algorithms, and a newly implemented ability to search in 7-Zip files. Also, some compression processes can now utilize several CPU cores for higher speeds.

This tool stands out among other archivers thanks to its ability to repair files. This feature allows you to save your important data from damaged archives based on the recovery data stored in them. Moreover, when you're browsing archive contents, you can see which of the files are good and which may require repairing (this identification system is far from perfect, though: EXE files are likely to be labeled damaged even if they are okay).

My overall impression from WinRAR is quite positive. WinRAR works quickly and smoothly, even though there are still some very minor inconveniences. Still, with the 40-day trial version you have enough time to make up your mind whether to buy it or not.

                            Picasa is a nice application designed to simplify the way you manage photos on your computer. With this tool, you can easily view, edit and organize your pictures however you like. Picasa has been recently updated and a variety of editing effects have been offered. Making use of this particular program, you're still likely to enjoy Basic Fixes options. Among them, you'll see such functions like cropping, editing in Picnik and retouching. The special mention is related to Sliders in the Tuning tab that assist you in changing colors and shades in your photo. As you know, there's 12 Basic Effects to enhance the picture: for instance, sharpen, saturation or graduated Tint.

In order to sophisticate the photo, employ Advanced effects: such fresh functions as Infrared film, 1960's, Posterize, Duo-Tone, etc. Also in this version, you're able to invert colors and cross the process. So you see that it is a feature-rich application. Don't be afraid to undertake an experiment on your photo as Picasa keeps photos in its original form even if you make up your mind to save changes. I find it pretty convenient that you can preview the results of applying effects to choose the most exited ones. The program allows for comparing different edits on the same or distinguished photos. That's the business of side-by-side editing. Sharing photos to Google+ is the most long expected option Picasa offers. It should be noted that this feature is available even for users who haven't joined Google yet. Keep in mind that you're able to upload pictures in a private way, as well. Furthermore, you can tag people who are in the photo and share them nearly with the whole world.

In short, Picasa deserves your attention if there's a need of a rich palette to exert substantial effects on your pictures that later can be shared to Google+.
